What Have Harvey, Irma, & Maria Taught Us?

Nearly 300,000 lost electricity as a result of Hurricane Harvey. Hurricane Irma knocked out power to as many as 16 million across the Southeast. And, just last week, Hurricane Maria slammed into Puerto Rico, resulting in more than 3 million without electricity. The prolonged power outages, widespread damage, and lost business wrought by these hurricanes is estimated to be between $200 billion and $300 billion, however, the estimates are still being determined. No doubt you have seen a few of the horrific images of those affected by these disasters on social media and television.

We are no stranger to natural disasters though in our area -- from earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods to fires and droughts.

If you have to face something of this magnitude, are you prepared? According to FEMA, more than 40 percent of businesses never reopen after a disaster, and for those that do, only 29% were still operating after 2 years. Bankruptcy is likely for those that lost their information technology for nine days or more after a disaster.

Items to consider:

  • If you were to evacuate or if you were displaced, do you have a plan in place regarding how you’d operate?
  • Do you have a plan in place if your business were to lose power? And, what if you lost power for more than a week or two – do you have a strategy for that?
  • If mobile phones are rendered useless as a result of a storm, do you have an alternate form of communication for you and your employees to use?
  • If catastrophe strikes, is your data protected?

We want to emphasize the risks that exist if you ARE NOT PREPARED.  Since September if "Disaster Preparedness Month," we would like to get you jump started by providing you with a FREE Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Assessment. This assessment will reveal how quickly your business could be back up and running after a natural disaster, hacker attack, or other data erasing tragedy.

At no charge we’ll come to your office and conduct a thorough assessment to determine:

  • How fast you could realistically be back up and running in the event of any natural or human disaster.
  • What backup, security and business continuity systems you currently have in place and determine whether they are sufficient.
  • Is all of your critical data being backed up, every day?
  • What are the largest threats to the security and integrity of your critical business data?
  • Do you know what steps and costs would be involved to rebuild your server and recover your data if you had to?

Since this is free, you have no good excuse not to do it now. If we don’t find any problems, you’ll at least have peace of mind that your network is secure and that you could recover quickly in the event of a disaster. But if we DO find a few loopholes, you’ll be able to fix them BEFORE you experience an unexpected catastrophe.
